The Access Key to the choedan Kal

From Robert Jordans The Wheel Of Time

Designed from the descriptions in the text of The Wheel Of Time, beginning in The Shadow Rising, I came away with a specific list of criteria that the statue needed. Both statues should have one raised arm, holding a clear crystal globe/sphere above their head. One is a bearded man, the other a woman. Both are in flowing robes, with an unknown styling. The statue is smooth white stone, possibly marble or porcelain. The faces of the statues are wise, serene and strong. The glow comes from two places, the body of the statue and the globe. It fits in one hand, can be turned over and fits in a large coat pocket.

A list of all the descriptions I found in the series can be found here.

Only the LEDs were put into the silicone mold to have resin poured around it, with the other electronics being added after the resin was poured. The potentiometer was placed in the non-sphere hand so that rotation of the hand would dim the LEDs. The battery pack was placed in the base of the statue. The push button was used to turn off the statue so that it was not continuously burning power.

After the resin had cured and all the electronics installed, it was spray painted with an uneven coating of matte white to give it variation in light level.

After the mold had cured completely, I removed the clay sculpture from the silicone and used it as a reference for the skeleton of the electronics that would be embedded in the resin pour.

Included in the statue are the following components:

  • A 12V warm-white continuous LED strip

  • A normally-open push button

  • A 12V lithium ion rechargeable battery pack

  • A B10k potentiometer

To achieve the desired effect of a glowing statue, I decided to model a statue out of clay around a wooden art armature in the desired pose inspired by the cover of the mass market paperback of Winters Heart, illustrated by Scott M Fisher.

I then took the clay sculpture and created a silicone mold of the Access Key.

The final Product

“A carved white stone figurine perhaps a foot long, lying on its back, a man holding a crystal sphere in one upraised hand.”

-The Shadow Rising, Chapter 68 - The Traps of Rhuidean

“...a great, half-buried statue... of the huge crystal sphere in its hand, glowing like the sun, pulsing with the One Power.”

-The Shadow Rising, Chapter 68: The Traps of Rhuidean

“...he produced two statuettes a foot high, a wise-looking, bearded man and an equally wise and serene woman, each in flowing robes and holding aloft a clear crystal sphere. From the way he handled them, they were heavier than they appeared.”

- Winters Heart, Chapter 11: Ideas of Importance

“A prick of light grew in front of Rand, sprouting from the center of the access key.”

-The Gathering Storm, Chapter 47: Reading The Commentary

“The access key began to glow in his hands.”

-The Gathering Storm, Chapter 50: Veins of Gold
